hewasbornatoin1611,andwaseducatedtherebythejesuits.hestudiedwatromeandnaples,heldsuccessivelytheofficesofprotonotaryapostolic,presidentoftheapostolicchamber,missaryofthemarcodiroma,andgovernorofmacerata;in1647,popeinnocentx(1644¨c55)madehimcardinaldeaconwiththetitleofsanticosmaedamiano.heafterwardsbecamelegatetoferrara.whenhewassenttoferrarainordertoassistthepeoplestrickenwithaseverefamine,thepopeintroducedhimtothepeopleofferraraasthe"fatherofthepoor."in1650,odescalchibecamebishopofnovara,inwhichcapacityhespentalltherevenuesofhisseetorelievethepoorandsickinhisdiocese.withthepermissionofthepopeheresignedasbishopofnovarainfavourofhisbrothergiulioin1656andwenttorome.whiletherehetookaprominentpartintheconsultationsofthevariouscongregationsofwhichhewasamember.inallthesecapacities,thesimplicityandpurityofcharacterwhichhedispyedbinedwithhisunselfishandopenhandedbenevolencetosecureforhimahighpceinthepopuraffectionandesteem.[1]
